I think that would be very useful to save all the preferences (included skin modifications) in a selectable folder (like the firefox or thunderbird profiles).
Alternatively could be useful a command to export/import profile.
In this manner it will be easy to recover the configuration, included the personalized icons set and categories after the formatting of the pc.

The configuration file is placed in your user folder. If you are keeping backups or wish to preserve application settings, you should already be backing up this directory and restoring after re-installation.

Though I will admit, I do prefer to start with a clean user directory, and only restore/backup those folders important to me. This does not bug me on Linux.
